1.  Who is your target audience?

This will have a great impact on the style, content and message of your project. Some variables that can have impact on a design include the age range of your client base, their gender, their geographic location, and additional factors such as economic status and religion may also come into play.

2.  What is your message?

Make sure that you can tell a designer exactly what message you are trying to convey to your client audience. The overall message can be something as simple as thanking customers or announcing a new product. Once that is established, go beyond it to decide on the  “mood” of your product or service message. Is it excitement? Sadness? Compassion? Gather some keywords that will help with the overall style of your design.

3.  What are the specs of your project?

Decide ahead of time on the size of your project.  For example, a 12-page brochure will take much longer than a 4-page foldout. The amount of content can help to determine the dimensions and number of pages. Also decide if you need black and white or  2-color vs. 4-color printing as this will affect your final price, as will factors like paper stock and the size the number of pieces that you need to  print.

4.  What is your budget?

In many cases, you may not know your actual budget for a project.  Regardless, it is usually a good idea to at least have a range in mind. The designer may be able to alter some parameters (such as timeframe or the amount of design revisions to be provided) to fit within your overall budget.

5.  Is there a specific deadline?

Make sure to tell the graphic designer if the project needs to be done by a specific date. The job may coincide with your product launch, or another important milestone. If there is not a deadline, you will want to create a timeframe for completing the project and present it to the designer..

6.  Should you provide a creative direction?

Whenever possible, it is helpful to at least provide a little creative direction from your own imagination. Of course, the designer will be creating something new and unique, but some ideas rom you will help them get on the right track to your vision. Provide design elements that you already have in mind such as colors, fonts, or other previous designs or websites. It is also important to point out if there is an existing brand that you need to match that may already have a color scheme, font, logo or other element that needs to be incorporated into your new design.

7.  Should you request your own copyright?

Unless otherwise specified in a contract, the graphic designer retains the right to his or her creations, and will most often attempt to do so. When hiring a designer, you would need to specify if you plan to request the specific rights to own the newly designed logo. Copyright laws protect against additional use other than for the original business or product that the logo was designed for without proper compensation or agreement.

Many business owners have a lot in common. We can usually find a way to get just about anything done. Most of us have the tough skin it takes to make it through the challenges we face as entrepreneurs. Quite a few of us are even pretty good at delegating responsibility to our employees. What separates those of us that move on to the next level is knowing when to bring in outside professionals so they can free us up so we can focus on our business. While many business owners eventually realize that they must turn to a legal or accounting firm to avoid a sticky situation or get out of one, many never make this realization when it comes to graphic design companies.

It may make sense to try to do everything yourself at first, especially when revenue is tight. The thing to remember though is that what you know isn’t what matters most, it’s what you don’t know that matters most. If you know everything about building a house except how to properly pour a foundation, how long do you think your house will last? The same goes for graphic design. You can design your own marketing materials, but unless you have a strong marketing background you’re probably not going to get the results you’re looking for.

A professional graphic designer knows what works and what doesn’t. They know what emotions certain colors provoke and what colors work well together. They know how to properly utilize contrast or size, shape and color to draw attention to various elements. They know which images will most effectively motivate your target market. Utilizing a professional designer will actually save you money (and then make you money) because they can produce a more effective marketing materials that will deliver results without a lot of trial and error. Keep in mind, they are more than just a Photoshop jockey. Professional graphic designers have spent years honing their skills and the software they use is nothing more than a tool. Simply owning a copy of Photoshop doesn’t make someone a graphic designer any more than owning a set of Matco socket wrenches makes them a mechanic.

So, to answer the question, what can a graphic design company do for your business?

They can produce marketing materials that will present a more powerful message

They can save you both time and money

They can increase your revenue by providing you with more effective marketing materials

They can help you get the most from your marketing budget

If you’re ready to take your business to the next level, spend some time talking to some graphic design companies to see which one would be the best fit for your company.

We’ve all dreamed of spending our working days reclinining back in a deck chair eating cheese sandwiches on an overcast summers day. But then we remember the mortgage/kids/wifes $500 a day drug habit and our fantasies turn to dust. It doesn’t have to be this way. Here at www.mindtap.co.uk we show in 5 easy steps how you can quit that lousy Graphic Design job and spend the rest of your life living in easy street.

Step 1: Think yourself in a better place and low and behold it will happen

This is your first step towards financial freedom. Imagine if you will yourself sat upon a huge pile of money, flinging it in the air with gay abandon and why not? Congratulations you’ve just made the first step towards making this a reality. Forget the graphic designer career you had mapped out. Let’s join the idle rich instead.

Step 2: Tell the boss what you think of him and burn those bridges!

Now its time to get some payback. Remember the time your design studio manager had you stay late and manually key in that 1oo page farming brochure text by hand and then laughed at you in your face? Right, we’ll show him who’s boss. A good way to be forcibly removed from the office and earn some extra kudos from your fellow graphic design employees is to take a dump and leave it festering away in a drawer in the bosses desk.Just wait for his reaction when he smells that sick stunt. You’re history.

Step 3: When you hit rock bottom the only way is up, up and away

No job = No money right? Wrong you putz. How do you think the tramps and beggars fill there days outside sainsburys? That’s right – drinking and robbing. It isn’t absolutely necessary to pick up a drink and drug habit at this stage but it isn’t going to harm your chances of success. Now would also be a good opportunity to get rid of the other half if you happen to have one. A spot of domestic violence after hitting the bottle is usually enough encouragement. Hey Presto, one more tiresome burdon off your back!

Step 4: Remember keep your vision and your dreams will come true

At every stage in this degenerate journey, never lose sight of that image we visuallised in step one of yourself sitting astride a huge pile of banknotes. They can take away your dignity but not your dreams. After several years of eeking out a living as a street bum its time to get this show on the road. Think hard about your previous day to day life, was there someone in your remote family or circle of friends who had a large stash of cash readily disposable? It’s time to pay them a visit with cap in hand.

Step 5: Invest wisely and you can say hello to a life of wanton abandon

Now after securing your large sum of cash from your chosen aquaintence, its prudent not to blow it all in one go on 200ft gold statues of yourself or buying an amusement park complete with zoo. No, you don’t want to be going back to the nine to five graphic design day job do you? There are a thousand ways to invest your cash so that it will sit pretty and continue giving you a steady stream or revenue for a long time. Property for example is ‘as safe as houses’ or maybe put it all in a high interest savings account. It’s taken a long time to reach your goal and hopefully the pain, ill health and loneliness have been worth it.
